56. Everyone then who through self restraint does away with sensual pleasure, which is intricate, convoluted and intertwined in many ways with every sensible object, makes the crooked path straight." Philokalia Vol 2nd Century, St. Maximus
Sensual pleasure can take many forms and is not limited either to pleasure or even to the body itself. One can take pleasure in hurtful as well as pleasureable thoughts and actions. What is important to note is that St. Maximos tells us the nature of these - they are intricate, intertwined and convoluted. Any doctor of the soul who deals with the passions discovers that they are not one dimensional but intertwined with sensible objects. That includes people. May God give us the grace to see those things that are intricately intertwined and convoluted within us and may He deliver us and may we practice appropriate mental and spiritual exercize to dislodge them. |
